Southall taxi driver locked up for fatal stabbing

Fri 09 Jan 2009
A Southall minicab driver has been locked up indefinitely for fatally stabbing a local businessman in June 2007.

Mr Mohammed Habib, 40, stabbed local businessman Mr Ahmed Shah with a very large knife after throwing chilli powder in his face.

Habib, an illegal immigrant from Pakistan, wore a dark camouflage pattern balaclava and a boiler suit during the attack. He also doused the victim with diesel.

He went on the run and was arrested in Edinburgh a month later, after police launched a nationwide manhunt.

In May 2008, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility.

The prosecution accepted his plea and psychiatrists have diagnosed him as suffering from paranoid psychosis.

He is currently being treated at the Three Bridges medium secure unit in Southall.

Last week, a judge ordered him to be detained indefinitely.
