Southall Vaisakhi Procession
Sun 06 Apr 2008The annual procession starts at the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Havelock Road and proceeds towards the Broadway through South Road. It then turns right into High Street, right again into Green Drive and finally finishes at the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Park Avenue.
The procession which lasts about 5 hours starts around 12.30 pm.
The streets of Southall were covered in snow in the morning. During the day occasional flakes of snow fell at regular interval and the weather was cold. This did not stop thousands of local attendees and lots more traveling from afar to attend one of the biggest Sikh processions in the UK.
While the procession is taking place roads from King Street, The Green and South Road are closed.
All along procession route especially South Road; the pavements are practically totally taken over by food stalls offering free food to everyone. This includes tea, chaat, naan, drinks can, fruit, fruit chaat, mathai (Indian sweets) and even fresh jalebis.
After all sheer number of people and food distributed, the streets are littered with food but the organizers have catered for this by having teams of people clearing up afterwards.
The actual Vaisakhi celebrations day is on the 13th of April 2008.If you have a local news story, share it with the rest of Southall, by using the contact form.
