'Master Manipulator' admits brutal murder of vulnerable Southall man

Tue 20 Oct 2026
A Southall man has admitted murdering 66-year-old Michael O’Donnell following an investigation that uncovered a pattern of controlling behaviour and financial exploitation.

Christopher Donnelly, 54, pleaded guilty to the murder at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, 19th October 2026, after detectives built a case using CCTV footage, financial records and witness evidence.

The case centres on the death of Mr O’Donnell, whose body was discovered at his home in The Green Quarter development on Samara Drive, Southall, in April 2025.

Police investigation uncovered months of abuse

Police were called to the residential address on 23 April 2025 after concerns were raised about a man’s welfare. Emergency services attended, and Mr O’Donnell was found dead inside the property.

Investigators established that he had died several weeks before his body was discovered. His remains had been concealed beneath a mattress and accumulated rubbish.

The investigation revealed that Donnelly had been living at Mr O’Donnell’s home and had allegedly subjected him to prolonged controlling behaviour while taking money from him.

Detectives traced Donnelly’s movements using CCTV and financial evidence, helping them reconstruct events surrounding the murder.

Forensic evidence helped establish timeline

Specialist forensic entomologists examined insect and larvae evidence recovered from the property. Their findings indicated that Mr O’Donnell had likely died in March 2025, weeks before police discovered his body.

Officers also examined financial transactions and footage showing Donnelly’s movements after the death. According to the Metropolitan Police, bank cards belonging to Mr O’Donnell were used for spending that included gambling, drugs and payments to sex workers.

Donnelly was arrested on the day Mr O’Donnell’s body was discovered. He was subsequently charged with murder and fraud by false representation.

Guilty plea brings case closer to sentencing

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who led the investigation, said the case demonstrated the devastating consequences of violence and exploitation against a vulnerable person.

He also highlighted the efforts made to conceal the killing and Mr O’Donnell’s body, describing the impact on the victim’s family as deeply distressing.

The guilty plea marks a significant development in the investigation, which relied on several strands of evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding Mr O’Donnell’s death.

Donnelly is due to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, 11 December 2026.
