Southall takeaway fined £6,800 after food safety failures

SAI20 Limited, trading as Abi Fast Food, at 233 The Broadway, Southall, and director Velventhan Ganesalingham, pleaded guilty to six offences each.
The case was heard at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on 8 July 2026 following an investigation by Ealing Council’s food safety team.
Council officers carried out inspections in 2025 and found repeated hygiene problems at the Sri Lankan takeaway and food business.
During a visit in January, officers found high-risk foods, including meat curries, stored at unsafe temperatures. They also identified concerns about cleaning, food contamination risks and staff training.
The council issued Hygiene Improvement Notices requiring the business to make changes. However, a follow-up inspection in March found the notices had not been fully addressed.
Officers reported that food safety records were incomplete, staff could not answer basic hygiene questions, and problems remained in food preparation areas.
A further inspection in May found around 20kg of high-risk food, including curries, rice and meat dishes, had been stored incorrectly. The food was voluntarily surrendered by staff.
Officers also found ongoing cleaning problems and structural issues at the premises, including a toilet opening directly into a food preparation area.
At court, SAI20 Limited admitted offences including failing to comply with improvement notices, failing to keep the premises clean, inadequate staff training and unsafe food storage.
The company was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £4,000 in costs and an £800 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £6,800.
Mr Ganesalingham was fined £600 and ordered to pay £1,180.70 in costs and a £240 victim surcharge.
Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for decent living incomes, said food businesses have a legal responsibility to ensure food sold to customers is safe.
She said the council’s food safety team would continue taking action against businesses that fail to meet required hygiene standards.
