Southall councillor becomes new Mayor of Ealing
Sat 30 May 2026
The Southall West councillor, who has represented the ward since 2022 and previously served as Deputy Mayor, described the appointment as a proud and significant moment. She becomes the first British-Somali woman who wears a hijab to hold the ceremonial role of Mayor in the borough.
Speaking after the ceremony, Mayor Mohamed said she hopes her achievement will inspire people from all backgrounds, particularly young women and girls. She emphasised the importance of representation and community leadership.
Mayor Mohamed’s journey to Ealing began when she arrived in Southall at the age of 11 after leaving Somalia because of conflict. Arriving with little English, she credits her success to determination, support from her family, and the encouragement of teachers who helped her settle into life in the UK. She has spoken warmly of the assistance she received during her education, particularly from staff at Dormers Wells High School.
During her year in office, she will be accompanied by her father, Ahmed Mohamed, while Councillor Ghulam Murtaza will serve as Deputy Mayor.
The Mayor has chosen "Unity" as the theme of her mayoral year. She plans to visit communities across Ealing, meeting residents from different backgrounds, faiths and experiences. Her aim is to promote understanding and celebrate the shared values that connect people throughout the borough.
Mayor Mohamed has selected two local charities to support during her term: Hope for Southall Street Homeless and Stepping Stones Together UK. Both organisations provide practical assistance and support to vulnerable residents, including those facing homelessness, hardship and social challenges. Through fundraising and awareness campaigns, she hopes to encourage greater community involvement and support for their work.
Ealing Council Leader Councillor Peter Mason congratulated the new Mayor, describing her as a committed public servant and a strong representative for Southall. He said her appointment reflects the borough’s diversity and sends a positive message about inclusion and opportunity for all residents.
Mayor Mohamed’s inauguration marks an important milestone for both Southall and Ealing, highlighting the borough’s multicultural character and the growing diversity of its civic leadership.
