Southall butcher fined after pest infestation discovered

Mohammed Hanif Khan, who runs Hanif Halal Meat on The Broadway, appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on 20 January 2026. He admitted four food hygiene offences, including failing to keep the shop clean, not having effective pest control systems in place, and not ensuring that food preparation areas and equipment were properly maintained and disinfected.
The case followed an unannounced inspection carried out by Ealing Council’s food safety officers on 23 October 2024. During the visit, inspectors found evidence of mice and insects throughout the shop, including droppings on surfaces and equipment. Larder beetles were also discovered in food preparation areas.
Officers reported a strong odour coming from the rear of the premises, which was linked to food debris trapped in machinery and around refrigeration seals. Structural gaps under doors and within walls were also identified, making it easier for pests to enter the building.
Due to the level of risk to public health, the business was served with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice and required to close immediately.
Khan was fined £1,923. In addition, he was ordered to pay £2,758.70 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £769, bringing the total to £5,450.70.
When officers returned to inspect the shop on 31 October 2024, they confirmed that substantial improvements had been made. The business was subsequently allowed to reopen.
A council spokesperson said that food businesses must meet strict hygiene standards and that enforcement action will be taken where serious breaches are found. The food safety team continues to carry out inspections across the borough to ensure residents are protected.
