Fire in Southall linked to stray firework sparks safety warning

Fri 24 Oct 2025
Firefighters have renewed calls for firework safety after a blaze at a row of shops and flats on North Road, Southall, in the early hours of Wednesday 22 October 2025.

When crews arrived, flames were reaching around ten metres high at the rear of the building. Two people were rescued from the first floor using an external staircase, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Around 40 residents from nearby properties evacuated before the London Fire Brigade arrived, and 15 people have been temporarily displaced.

The fire destroyed a storage annex at the rear where it began, severely damaged parts of two shops, and caused smoke damage to adjoining flats and businesses. Firefighters also removed and cooled four propane cylinders as a precaution.

Investigators believe the fire was accidental, started by a stray firework that landed on the annex roof and melted through.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said the incident highlights the risks of using fireworks unsafely, urging the public to attend organised displays or, if celebrating at home, to buy only CE-marked fireworks from licensed sellers and follow the Fireworks Code.

Control officers received the first call at 1:31am, and eight fire engines along with around 60 firefighters from Southall, Ealing, and Hillingdon stations attended the scene. The blaze was brought under control just after 3:40am.

The fire occurred during a busy period of firework-related calls and incidents.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said:

This incident is evidence of the damage that can be caused when fireworks aren't used safely.
Our advice is to attend a safer, organised display instead of purchasing fireworks for use at home.

They added:

If you are going to host your own display, it’s important to ensure you are buying safe fireworks from a reputable, licensed seller with a CE safety mark. Secure them properly in the ground, and keep them far away from buildings, trees, animals and people.
Always follow the Fireworks Code and remember there are strict laws around when you can purchase and use fireworks. Never set them off if you’ve been drinking alcohol and once a firework is lit, never go back to it.
Disposing of fireworks safely is just as important as using them correctly. Allow fireworks to cool properly before throwing them away.”
