Indian cricket fans celebrate victory in Southall
Mon 24 Sep 2007India batted first and could only manage a modest score 157-5, despite a solid knock of 75 from the opener Gautam Gambhir. This was due to Umar Gul taking 3-28.
In reply, Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals and the run rate slowed down considerably. It seemed like Pakistan had no chance of winning until Misbah-ul-Haq hit three thumping sixes of an over by the off-spinner Harbhajan.
In the last over, with 6 needed off 4 balls, Misbah's gamble of trying to loft the ball over the keeper's head backfired and Pakistan lost.
Irfan Pathan, the man-of-the-match bowled brilliantly and took 3-16.
Within minutes of India's triumph over Pakistan, their supporters could be heard celebrating aloud on Southall Broadway. They could be seen dancing along Southall Broadway to the beat of the Bhangra dhol drums. The Police were out in force, on the street and in their vans, just in case things got out of hand, as these celebrations carry on for a long time. The occasional fireworks were also heard.
Shahid Afridi was the player of the tournament.
