Assessing chemical exposures in Southall
Date: Sun 16 Apr 2023Time: 3 pm - 4 pm
Public meeting on Sunday 16th April at the Dominion Centre about chemical exposures in the air in Southall.
This is a very important and topical issue in Southall and air quality directly impacts upon the health of local residents. I hope you can share amongst you contacts and encourage others to attend.
This is independent research being conducted by Imperial College London and they are planning air quality studies around the Southall Waterside site. To find out more about the study, attend an information meeting on 16th April at the Dominion Centre.
These projects are part of the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Environmental Exposures and Health and Imperial College London.
- The first is to determine whether it is possible to identify a chemical signature, groupings of chemicals in the air, that clearly discriminate brownfield site emissions as they undergo redevelopment, from the multitude of other sources within the urban environment
- This will pilot newly developed passive air samplers by deploying 50+ throughout the community within 1 km radius of the brownfield site.
- For this campaign they are seeking community input into the best locations to place the samplers
- The second project involves investigating how these outdoor ambient measurements relate to personal exposures by recruiting 20+ participants to wear the passive air samplers
- They will also collect dried blood spots, urine samples, and a perform a short questionnaire to examine how the exposures impact on health.
- For this second study they are seeking volunteers
There is another broader national epidemiological study, led by the Imperial Small Area Health Statistics Unit, using a methodology that investigates the relationship between exposure to Brownfields sites across the country, linked to health data. This will be taking place over the next several years. We do not have any more information about this project.
The lead for both the Southall research projects Dr Ian Mudway…an expert on air quality and has also been involved in evaluating ULEZ.
