Pakistan election celebrations in Southall

Thu 16 May 2013
Local Pakistanis unite at Chaudhry’s TCK to celebrate the success of the elections in Pakistan.

To get elected in Pakistan you need lots of money and influence. Yet, more than two thirds of the previously elected MPs paid no income tax. A recent report by Pakistan's Centre for Investigative Reporting revealed that President Asif Ali Zardari was among those politicians who paid nothing.

The recent elections in Pakistan resulted in a smooth transfer of power. This is a big achievement. But the bigger achievement is the demand for change and kicking out individuals who did nothing for the country.

To mark this happy occasion a function was held at Chaudhry’s TKC restaurant on Wednesday evening. Dalawar Chaudhry said: "I organised this event for the community to get together and pray and hope for a new era in Pakistan."

He also said that weaker economies have gone ahead of Pakistan. Imran Khan had provided a vision for Pakistan. Lots of promises have been made and we are more hopeful of these being fulfilled.

Mr Asghar Butt said that Nawaz Sharif and Imran khan have "woken the sleepy people of Pakistan" to take their destiny into their own hand.

Rather than tax the rich citizens of Pakistan, the previous government decided to impose a tax on overseas Pakistanis. A tax on incoming international calls to Pakistan was imposed to raise revenue of around $500 million each month. One speaker called for this tax to be abolished to win the hearts of the people.

The Chairman of the Jamia Masjid on Townsend Road, Khawaja Asif, praised Dalawar Chaudhry for hosting such events. He congratulated the Sharif brothers on their victory.

The outgoing Mayor of Ealing Councillor Mohammad Aslam said we also need to take an interest in the politics of this country to succeed. Pakistan election results celebration in Southall
