Southall residents guard temples and mosques

Tue 09 Aug 2011
Hundreds of men stood guard outside their temples and mosques in Southall to protect their community.

Earlier in the day there were people on the Gurdwara roof, opposite the Glassy Junction, looking to spot any potential trouble early on. Local residents are also patrolling the streets.

Southall is just a few miles from Ealing which saw some of the worst of the riots on Monday night.

The riots have united Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus into one big community.

The rioters won’t care which community they attack. They have already made their intentions known by threatening to attack the mosques and the gurdwaras.

The people of Southall are well aware of these threats and are taking precautions.

Almost all of the businesses on Southall Broadway, South Road and King Street were closed and had their shutters down on the advice of the local Police.
