Sikh Protest in Southall

Tue 08 Jul 2008
On Sunday 29th June 2008, local Sikh Youths in association with Dal Khalsa UK, held a rally protest outside the Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Southall, the biggest Gurdwara outside of India.

They were protesting against the activities of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect.

The also handed out leaflets in both English and Panjabi explaining to passers by and worshippers what is happening on the Sirsa issue and about the killing of an unarmed Sikh.

In May 2007, the Dera Sacha Sauda sect placed an advert in a local newspaper showing its leader, Gurmeet Singh, impersonating Sikhism's 10th and last guru, Guru Gobind Singh.

Impersonating a Sikh guru always runs the risk of offending even the most moderate of sikhs. It led to a lots of protests and rioting.

To date, no sincere apology has been been received by the Akal Takht, the seat of supreme religious clergy of the Sikhs, in Amritsar, Punjab.

Last year, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was also charged with two cases of murder and one case of rape.

On 21 June 2008, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's personal bodyguard opened fire on Sikh protesters outside a shopping mall in Bombay and killed one unarmed local Sikh, Balkar Singh.
