The young winners of Ealing Council’s environmental art competition have been announced and their designs displayed on the side of council recycling lorries.

Bonita Arzoz (10), from St Anselm's Catholic Primary School, Southall, won the primary school category after submitting a skilful and colourful design showing why it’s important to recycle.

In the secondary category there were four joint winners, all from William Perkin CE High School, Greenford. Ivy French, Maisie Hall, Maggie Shopova and George French (all 13) worked together to produce a picture that represented their ‘recycled world’.

Entries were received from across the borough and the winners were picked by a judging panel. The winning pictures will now be seen by thousands of local residents.

Bonita, along with the rest of her school, had the opportunity to see her transformed design for the first time on Monday, 25 April when it visited St Anselm’s Catholic Primary. Keith Townsend, executive director, environment and customer services, presented Bonita with her prize, an Amazon Fire tablet.

The four winners from William Perkin High School also received a visit from a recycling lorry decorated with their winning design and each received an Amazon gift voucher.

Mark Laws, operations manager at Amey, the council’s environmental services contractor, presented St Anslem’s Catholic Primary and William Perkin CE High School each with a cheque for £150 to be used on books and equipment.

Keith Townsend said: “Well done to everyone who took part; the entries were of a very high standard. It was a tough job for the panel to pick only two winning designs and my congratulations go out to Bonita, Ivy, Maisie, Maggie and George for taking the top prizes. We were really impressed with their fabulous designs.

"Children and young people have a keen interest in doing the right thing and caring for their environment which is why we wanted to use their creativity to get the recycling message across to residents. I hope that our transformed lorries will encourage local people to recycle more.”
