Free cycle sessions for women
Wed 27 Feb 2013

Women will be able to explore the parks and cycle lanes of Southall in a series of free guided bike rides beginning in March.

Southall Womenís Cycling Club (SWCC) and Cycle Training UK (CTUK) will host the sessions set up by Ealing Council using Transport for London funding.

Longer distance, faster Ďregular ridesí for more experienced cyclists take place for five weeks from Saturday, 2 March 2013.

Beginner rides take place every Saturday for five weeks from Saturday, 6 April and also for five weeks from Saturday 18 May. These sessions are ideal for people who can already ride but want to build their confidence.

Sessions are led by a female instructor and begin at Southall Park at 10am until 1pm.

The rides are part of Ealing Councilís direct support for cycling scheme which offers a range of practical help to encourage residents to cycle.

Southall was chosen because far fewer people cycle in the area. CTUK also found that women who had taken up cycling through its local GP referral scheme were keen to continue training.

Keen cyclist and cabinet member for environment and transport, Bassam Mahfouz said: "Cycling is a great way to get around. Itís fast, cheap, environmentally-friendly and an easy way to get healthy."

"Women who took part last year told us that the sessions gave them the chance to improve their cycling skills, make friends and learn more about cycling in the area."
