Tributes paid to Dormers Wells ward councillor Tejinder Dhami

Tributes have been paid to Councillor Tejinder Dhami, a councillor for Dormers Wells ward, who has sadly passed away.

Councillor Dhami represented the Dormers Wells ward since his election on 6 May 2002. He served as the Mayor of Ealing for 2018-2019. During his Mayoral year he supported Heartlink and Age UK.

During his spell as a councillor he served as vice chair of the Regulatory Committee. He was also a member the Corporate Parent Committee, the Freedom of the Borough Committee, the Planning Committee and the Scrutiny Panel.

Councillor Dhami lived and worked in the borough of Ealing since he came to the UK in June 1962. He worked at the Lyons Maid ice cream factory for 28 years and then for Marks and Spencer .

He was a life member of the Indian Workers Association (Southall) and an executive member of the IWA in 1997. He maintained a keen interest in sport, taking part in Indian Gymkhana in the 1970s and was a life member of the Indian Gymkhana.

With Local Elections scheduled for May 2022, there will be no by-election prior to that.

Virendra Sharma , MP for Ealing Southall, said “A dear friend, we will all mourn the loss of Cllr Tejinder Dhami. His loss is devastating for so many in his family and for his friends. Dormers Wells Ward will be the worse off for losing him.”

Julian Bell, former leader of Ealing Council, said “Immensely sad to hear of the passing today of former Mayor of Ealing Council & UK Labour colleague Cllr Tejinder Dhami. He was quiet and humble but hugely effective in what he did as a councillor for Southall residents & Ealing Labour.“

Councillor Peter Mason, leader of the council said: "Tejinder was kind, wise and resolute in equal measure and I have very fond and warm memories of him that I will cherish."

“He willingly gave his time and experience to the community he loved and will be missed by all of us who worked closely with him and those he represented."

“Whilst Tejinder was soft in speech, his wisdom and sage advice has been such a feature of his time on the council and in the wider community over the many decades of his public service, not least during his Mayoralty."

“On behalf of all councillors and council officers, our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
