“Stop Poisoning Us” protest in Southall

Thu 02 Dec 2021
The “Stop the Poisoning” protest took place on Sunday outside Southall Train station and the Green Quarter.

Despite the cold weather, it was was very well attended. It was to highlight the continued suffering caused by development on the old Southall Gasworks site.

It was also to raise awareness of residents being bullied into silence instead of being given support for being unwell due to their surroundings

There were hard hitting speeches from David Marsden and Sufiyan Abdul-Qayum, who are both are Ealing Independents candidates for Ealing Southall. Other speakers were Joe Bhangu, a Southall resident.

Ealing Independents Chair and Truus Jansen member of GCU (Gasworks Communities United) and SHAC(Social Housing Action Campaign), set the tone for a very engaging demo outside of Southall station, the Berkeley Group's marketing suite and on the Green Quarter where residents listened to us from their balconies.

None of the local Labour councillors attended or the MP Virendra Sharma. They were supported however, by The Green Party in addition to Ealing Independents.

There were excellent speeches on gentrification and the effects of inhaling toxic gases from the Green Quarter.

Ealing Council and Berkeley Group have failed to install odour detection technology in residents' homes for the past 3 years.

Gasworks Communities United are an alliance of communities affected by Berkeley Homes’s development of disused gasworks sites in the UK.

Residents of Southall and the wider community were invited by Berkeley Group to The Green Quarter in Southall for an exciting Christmas extravaganza on Wednesday 1 December 2021.

Local councillors would be on top of the guest list and most likely to attend this event.

The last people Berkeley Group want to see is the next door neighbours who are complaining about their toxic pollution.
