Street cleaning, rubbish and recycling services across the borough are to be brought under the control of Ealing Council, following the end of its contract with its current provider Amey.

The decision, approved by the council’s cabinet on Tuesday 10 July 2018, agrees in principle to the founding of a local authority company (LAC) to deliver environmental services across the borough.

By operating through the LAC, the council would have greater control over the services with more flexibility to respond to resident concerns and deliver the council’s ambition to become the number one borough for recycling in London. The council will ensure fair pay with all staff earning the London Living Wage at a minimum and will put in place apprenticeships for young people.

Councillor Mik Sabiers, cabinet member for environment and highways said: "This is a great step forward towards delivering better services for residents."

"We know how important it is to local people to have good recycling services, clean streets, beautiful parks and be able to minimise waste. We are encouraging residents to have more control and involvement in their local environment and this will enable us to do that."

The decision to explore other options for environmental services was taken by the council in March and the decision to end the current contract, which runs until July 2020, has been taken mutually with Amey. There will be a continuation of current arrangements until services are transferred.
