Have Your Say - Proposed sale of Southall Town Hall

Date: Thu 29 Jun 2017
Time: 6pm
Description:
Southall Community Alliance is arranging a public meeting on Thursday 29th June about the proposed disposal of Southall Town HalI. The meeting will take place at Southall Town Hall, 1 High Street, Southall, UB1 3HA starting at 6.00 pm.

In December 2016 Ealing Council approved a recommendation to dispose of Southall Town Hall. Ealing Council officers said that the building was running at a loss and would need a lot of investment in repair works. Although there was no consultation with residents or users of the building, it was decided that the building was too expensive to run and had to be disposed of.

We were told that the building would not be sold but by seeking bidders for a 250 year lease, the building is effectively leaving public ownership. This is unacceptable as Southall, already a deprived area, risks losing out again.

Southall Town Hall has been Southall's main civic building since it was opened in 1897 and has 12-15,000 visitors annually, nearly all of whom are from ethnic minority backgrounds, often do not speak English and have many difficulties in accessing local public services.

This is a community building that helps the poor and disadvantaged, provides advice, advocacy, training, employment and community services to thousands of Ealing residents annually. The building offers a common space for all residents regardless of race or ethnicity and is an excellent example of a site that contributes to community integration and interaction.

Many residents and groups are very unhappy about these proposals, as we should be looking to preserve heritage and community buildings and not sell them.

Please join us at the meeting on the 29th June and 'Have Your Say' about the proposed sale of the Town Hall.
