Don't Close Southall Job Centre Protest

Date: Fri 31 Mar 2017
Time: 12:45pm - 2pm
Description:
PLEASE ACT QUICKLY!
The government has announced it wants to CLOSE Southall Jobcentre to save money at the expense of the local community.

PLEASE SAVE OUR JOBCENTRE - TAKE PART IN THE PROTEST.

In Southall we have:

  • A high unemployment rate
  • Some of the most deprived residents in many areas (in Education, Skills and Training, health and disability, crime, barriers to Housing Services) not just in Ealing Borough but in England as a whole.
  • An extraordinary ethnic make-up. Many of the staff who work at the Job Centre are multilingual, local, and speak the languages that resident’s speak. They understand the needs of the community.
  • A job centre with facilities to allow you immediate access to the Benefit Centres. (Assistance with phone calls and ability to send immediate scans to benefit centres).
  • Facilities in the job centre which allow you to job search (provision of computers).

The closure of the Job Centre would mean:

  • People will have to travel at their own expense to Ealing or Acton Jobcentre.
  • Deprived residents, particularly those with multiple health conditions, and mental health conditions, will be even more deprived.
  • Another closure of a valuable service provided in the area in addition to Ealing hospital and local community centres. Southall people pay taxes – why are we the ones to be cut?
  • This won’t just affect the unemployed – everyone on Tax Credits will soon have to claim Universal Credit instead and if they have health conditions they will have to go to the job centre.
